| Mixed Media/Assemblage copyright Nita Penfold 2000 Divided Drawer with children’s toys, doll heads, rocks, advertising postcards, wire. This shrine is an attempt to show the fragmentation of men and their bodies by patriarchy’s emphasis on aggression and machismo in mostly industrialized North American and European cultures. The images here permeate the media, which then permeates most children’s lives. The media promotes all the stereotypes of “male” qualities which are seen as necessary to maintain control: aggressiveness, possessiveness, sexual virility and power, physical strength, emotional control. This stereotyping causes harm to male as well as female children by limiting their potential to become full human beings with a wide range of qualities. The scary part for me was how readily available these images were to obtain. |
